Weekend Visitors

Displaying 20140217_093005.jpg

Some of our favorite people came to visit this weekend!!  Edmonton friends Lauren and Analee were in BC visiting family, and they made time to swing by our neck of the woods.  Keith and I drove up to Vernon after church on Sunday, Analee and Lauren drove down, and we met at Caleb and Monica's.  It felt like old times!  We had dinner together, chatted, played games, and just enjoyed each other's company.  We all slept over, then headed out to breakfast before Lauren and Analee had to drive home.

It was a quick visit, but it was wonderful.  We love our friends and were so happy to see them!!!

Saying Goodbye

The hardest part about leaving Edmonton was leaving the friends we had made.  I struggled making friends once we moved up there.  I wasn't working or going to school, so my social circle completely consisted of church.  I never made many friends in Edmonton, but the ones I did make are amazing!  We were so far from any family, that our friends really became our family.  We would have weekend dinners and Sunday dinners, date nights and game nights, holiday feasts and temple trips together.  They were/are a wonderful support system.

Our friends were great in helping us move.  We couldn't have done it without them.  They fed us dinners and breakfasts, and helped us load up the moving truck and clean the apartment.  It was so difficult to say goodbye to them. I am so thankful for them and love them very much!

With Carmen Tribiger.  She and her husband Eric were so awesome when Keith and I moved to town.  They gave us a bunch of furniture and kitchen stuff for free.  And she gave me a job!...or allowed me to babysit her cute kids.

My cute primary class.  I loved teaching them!!

Hopefully our Edmonton friends can come visit us soon, because I miss them like crazy!!

Today I Ate Goat

Erin and I went out for lunch to celebrate her upcoming birthday (Happy Birthday, Erin!!!).  Something that is great about Erin is that she is kind of like my "food buddy".  Other than Keith, she is the only person I can persuade to eat sushi with me, she is the only person who go out for Thai with me, and she is the only person who dreams about Taiwanese tomato soup the way I dream about Taiwanese guavas.  That's right, kindred spirits.  So, when Erin and I go for lunch, we go for lunch.

Today we needed something quick and delicious, so we decided to head down to a local Indian buffet.  They had all sorts of curry dishes, naan, rice, yellow rice, and wide variety of vegetarian options.  As I perused the selections, I took a little of this and then a little of that, and then I saw it.  A brownish meat swimming in a sea of red curry sauce.  The sign above simply read, "Goat Meat".

Now, how was I supposed to pass that up?  I mean, if you know me (and you should), I am a sucker for new and usual foods.  I always lean toward the different and unexpected.  And I am definitely up for an adventure.

I took a little scoop and plopped on my plate, next to the naan and the chicken curry.  I sat down at the table, spread my napkin over my lap, took hold of my knife and fork, looked with glee upon my meal, and dug in.

Of course I tried the goat first.  How could I not?  I pricked the brown lump with my fork and it instantly fell apart.  Isn't Indian food great that way?  How the meats are so tender and the spices are just the perfect blend to make the food so delicate and delicious?  I brought the fork to my mouth and took a bite.

It wasn't bad...in fact, it tasted pretty good.  I don't know what I was expecting, but it tasted exactly how I expected it to.

There was something about it, though.  Something that was different than all appearances had led me to believe.  Hmm...how to describe it...  I guess if I could only use one word I would say...that goat is...

Chewy.

5 Things

  1. I attended a cooking class with Megan the other night.  We learned how to make gnocchi.  Now, not only  am I a gnocchi-making fiend, I can finally cross off the first item on my life list for 2012 ("Take some random and ridiculous class").  Nothing is as random as gnocchi.
  2. My dad had the hiccups the other day.  This is significant for 2 reasons.  First, in all my 28 years, I don't think I had ever heard my father hiccup (my mother, who has been married to him for almost 33 years, acknowledge the same fact).  And second, I now know where I inherited my very loud and often uncontrollable hiccuping.
  3. Last night I saw the Hunger Games with my friends Jill and Crystal.  I thought the movie very well done and it was so fun to go with my girls!  I did shed a tear or two when Rue died, but it was much better controlled then the buckets I cried when I read the scene in the book.
  4. Friday night I attended my mission reunion.  I only went because Sister Yang, my second to last mission companion and my trainee from Taiwan, was going to be there and I haven't seen her for 5 years.  It was great to see her and nice to get a hug from President and Sister Nielson, even though I didn't know anyone else there, couldn't find a parking spot within a block of the church, and was falling asleep during the devotional.
  5. As April is National Poetry Month and as I feel like I should show my blog some love, I've decided to sign up for Nablopomo again.  Do you know what that means?  That means that not only do I get to blog every day for the month, I also get to write some poems.  Lucky you.

Tasting the Rainbow

Erin, Carrie, and I went for sushi on Saturday.  Simply Sushi.  Only 15$ for an all you can eat lunch.  YUM!

As there were just the three of us, they sat us at the sushi bar.  We ate and laughed and talked and just had a good time.  As we were eating, a lone male was seated next to me.  He minded his own business for a while, ordering all sorts of nigiri, but eventually he began talking to us.

Sometime later, this kid ordered a rainbow roll, and then casually stated that he had observed that none of the three of us had ordered anything raw.  I had just had an Alaskan roll, which by the way, was a few kinds of raw, but I sensed a challenge.  I felt that I had something to prove.

In order to show that I can eat raw and so as not to out done by this American-born Vietnamese, I ordered a rainbow hand roll after he gave his order for a rainbow long roll.  (Hand rolls are smaller and have a better seaweed to rice ratio).  We were going to eat the rainbow together.

Now, I'm ok with raw fish.  I can eat raw tuna, raw yellow tail, raw salmon, and it's all okay if it's in a long roll wrapped with rice and seaweed that's been sliced.  It's just that large chunks of raw fish are a little harder to chew.  Yet, as I took my roll from the chef, I was reminded that this was not the first time I had chosen to take on an eating challenge with uncooked sea dwellers.  Why do I let myself get talked (psyched) into these things?

Comparing my hand roll to the kid's long roll, I think he got the better end of the deal.  His fish was sliced thin and place atop the rice.  My fish was chunky, with 4 different species stuffed into a small seaweed wrap.  White.  Pink.  Red.  Orange.  Where do I begin?

I scoped out the wrap, decided on a technique, and tentatively took my first bite.  A little fishy, a little chewy, but not terrible.  I took a second bite and counted only four bites left.  I could do that, I could do four more bites of raw.

The kid encouraged me on.  "Put some ginger and some wasabi on it.  It's good."

Ginger.  I'd forgotten about the ginger.  And I love ginger.  Once I laced the roll up with the pickled goodness, I had no trouble getting the last four bites down.  In fact, it was pretty good.

I didn't die, I didn't get sick, but it is safe to say I probably won't be ordering a rainbow roll again anytime too soon.  It wasn't gross; I just prefer other things.

But I passed.  I passed the challenge and ate the rainbow.  And I did relearn a lesson that I hadn't remembered for a long time: Never go up against an Asian when raw fish is on the line.

Get it?  "Fish on the line"?  Ha!

The Not-So-Good Samaritan

I am a terrible person.  Like, a really, really, terrible person.  Here's what happened:

I was in a rush to leave work today as I had to run to cater my mom's YCC event.  As I'm leaving campus, I turn the corner and notice a car pulled off to the side of the road with it's hood up.

Do I stop to help?  No.  Stopping for a stalled car isn't something I do, even in daylight.

Well, as I approach the car, I notice that there is a kid on the sidewalk talking on his cell phone.  It was very apparent that he was the owner of the car.

Do I stop to help?  No.  He's on his phone, he's getting help.  He'll be fine.

As I drive nearer, the kid looks up.  I recognize him.  He's my friend--a good friend.  True, we haven't hung out since high school, but we run into each other occasionally.

Do I stop to help now, now that I recognize him as my friend?  Nope.  What do I do instead?  Give a smile, a gigantic wave, and drive on by.

It wasn't until I was a minute down the road that I put two and two together.  Uh, my friend, in need, and I ignored him???  Did I turn around?  Did I go back to help him?  Did I make sure he was okay?  No, no, and no.  I was in too much of a hurry to help elsewhere rather than bother going back.

I am the worst friend ever.

The moral of the story is, if you see my driving by as you sit on the side of the road with your stalled car, don't get your hopes up--I probably won't stop.  I'll wave 'hi', though.

Got Milk?

Yesterday, I milked a cow for the very first time.

And you know what?

I am a cow-milking pro.

Seriously.

I think I have missed my calling in life.

Nothing like sushi and cows with the girls.

Thanks, Carrie and Erin!

You can go milk a cow, too!!
Wheeler Farm has cow milking ever day at 4:15 and 5:00 and it only costs $0.50 a person.
Fun!

Friends from Far Places

One of my best Taiwanese friends, Sanina,
and her cute husband got married in the Salt Lake Temple in April.

I'm so sad that she is living so far away
(in Hong Kong, which is even further away than Taiwan!),
but I was so happy to see her while she was here.

She spoke to me in her rusty English, I spoke to her in my rusty Chinese,
And we understood each other perfectly.

And when she found out that Keith and I still aren't engaged, she said with a wink,
"It's okay.  The girl can ask the boy.  That's what I did."

I love her!

From Jillian, on her 27th Birthday

Dear Everyone,

Thank you for making my 27th birthday amazing!

I received flowers from my coworkers

And flowers from my boyfriend

And tons of emails, phone calls, text messages, and fb posts from everyone else.

You are AWESOME!

I have a feeling it is going to be a very good year.

Sun, Salt, and Spirals

Today I went to the Spiral Jetty.

Between the salt, rocks, lizards, cow pies, jack rabbits, dirt, and dead pelicans,
it was quite the adventure.

It was hot.  And bright.

And I got a little sunburned.

But it was awesome.

Thanks, Erin and Amanda,
for helping me cross another item off my "To Do List",
and for making my 12th grade Art History dream come true!

Park City

Saturday I was able to go with one of my mission companions, Erin, her husband, Travis,
and our new friend Zhang Li Juan from China to Park City.

We took a ski lift up the mountain

and walked around a bit at the top.

And I quickly realized my Chinese is as rusty as this old tower.

Then  we went to Olympic Park

And watched aerial practice.

And what trip to Park City is complete without lunch and a stop at the Outlet mall?

We had so much fun and enjoyed being tourists for the day.

The best part was that I got to practice my Chinese.
You can definitely tell it's been a long time since you've conversed in the dulcet tones when,
after speaking Chinese for 7 hours straight, you are completely, mindnumbingly exhausted.

Who knew Chinese took so much brain power?

Skipping Sunday School

I ran into Carrie in Sacrament meeting yesterday.

Let's just say I didn't make it to my next meeting:
We had too much to catch up on.

Taoyuan Stake Conference, May 2007, Taiwan

Carrie is super awesome.

One day she was interested in going to English class,
and the next (well, just a really short two weeks later)
she was getting baptized.

I met her two days later when I moved into the area and taught her a new member lesson.

She's pretty much one of my favorite people ever.

A Wild Weekend

Saturday night I drank shots and played poker...Mormon style.

It was rather entertaining.

Maybe Next Year We'll Try Floats

The 3rd Annual St. Patrick's Day Root Beer Taste Testing
celebration was a blast!

Thanks, Dave and Tiffany, for throwing one heck of a party!

And the 2010 Winning Root Beer was.... (drum roll, please)...

Henry Weinhard's, for the second year in a row.
It must be some good root beer to win twice
(that, or Chason swung the vote, which I think he did).

I'm sure Dave will be posting pictures of our jig dancing skills soon.

A Bit Flushed

I ran into one of my Zeta sisters last night. It was so fun to see her, especially since I haven't seen her since before my mission. It's been a long time.

However, seeing her made me wonder: Why is it that whenever I happen to run into someone I haven't seen for a while it is always in the bathroom?

Secret Stalker

How can I secretly stalk someone's blog if
they are determined to make it private?
Especially when it is someone I've never met?
And whose now-husband I had a crush on in high school?

What a dilemma!

When in Sweden...

I went with my friend Clary to the Annual Swedish Crayfish Dinner for the Swedish Heritage Society. As far as I know, I have zero Swede in me. But it sure was fun to pretend. There were people sitting next to me who were only speaking Swedish to each other. The food was of the Swedish variety and was delicious (except maybe the crayfish). And I stood up and sang the Sweden National Anthem with the rest of them at the end of the sing-a-long. Who knew there were such fun cultural events going on in Salt Lake City?

Clary's the second from the left.

The lady leading the Swedish sing-a-long.

Me in my crayfish bib. The food was good-definitely worth the thumbs up.

Clary and her new crayfish friend, which she then ate.

Texas, anyone?

Saturday, I got to hang out with these two

Katie V. and Porter Long

as they traveled through SLC.

It was so fun to see them, even it was for just a couple of hours.
(And it's nice to know I'm not the only one with disintegrating Chinese)

Anyone up for a road trip?
I've been invited to Lubbock for harvest...

Girls Night

Me, Kathy, Stacey, Crystal, Jill, Clary
Utah Festival Opera
August 1, 2009

I love the fact that I have friends who are willing
to drive to Logan just to attend the Opera with me.

It is definitely an acquired taste.

And with our attractive left shoulder blades
and riveting right elbows,
I would say we were looking HOT!

Thanks, girls!
